Elizabeth's mother, Anne Boleyn, was beheaded by her father, King Henry VIII, when Elizabeth was only three. This early loss of a parent was difficult for Elizabeth just as it was difficult for me as a child when my father died. Because her father was the cause of her mother's death, this experience was especially difficult for Elizabeth and is sometimes cited as the reason she chose never to marry, a unique and difficult decision for a woman of her time.
